After seeing both the Gwent and West Wales FA are still running their Senior Cup competition which is open to all clubs, including Swansea and Newport County, can anybody tell me why the SWFA still ban Welsh League sides from entering. I expect Scril and many others will remember when this cup comp was open to all clubs and became a highlight of the season. I especially remember my club Sully and Ton Pentre contesting the final on a few occasions and also having the pleasure of beating Cardiff City who sometimes played quite a few first team players. This is a competition that should be brought back for all clubs in the SWFA area just as the other Associations do. What are peoples thoughts?

No I think you are wrong. My husband is on the WWFA and this competition finished about 4 years ago due to lack of interest from some Clubs

I can throw some light on this - the Senior Cup was stopped for several years from 1993 until 2003. It was something to do with the Welsh Cup being open to more teams due to English pyramid exclusion from it. In 2003 the SWFA recognised that the South Wales Intermediate Cup (known by most as the Amateur Cup) that was open to all Senior, Amateur and recreational parks teams was constantly being won by SW Amateur or SW Senior League clubs and in the process parks teams taking hammerings. In fact the Intermediate Cup had been won by a Senior or Amateur League club for the previous 10 years (Bridgend Street the last team to win as a then "parks team" when beating Barry Athletic in 1992 at Ninian Park, we were then Cardiff & District League). So, the decision was made to re-invent the SW Senior Cup, making it open to Senior League and Amateur League clubs ONLY and demoting the Intermediate Cup to be open to parks/recreational teams only. The Intermediate and SW Senior Cups are a very tasty fast buck for the SWFA with nil prize money for clubs. When we won the cup in 2008 we asked for 50% of net gate reciepts but were told that the cup final day was run at a loss to the SWFA after the deduction of ground and referee fees, trophies and a spam sandwich buffet. They failed to mention the £2240 raised from the £35 per team entry fee plus what went through the gate on the day. We won the cup but calculated that after paying for the entry fee, home tie officials, ground fees, travel and other sundries it cost us over £850 for the priveledge of winning it.

Fairplay, I well remember playing Sully in the SWFA cup at your ground in the early eighties, you beat us 2-1 on aggregate, I believe that the final was a two legged afair then, I may be wrong. I also remember Barry Town thrashing us 7-3 in another final. We won that Cup 11 times

Those were the days Scril and you could be right but what tremendous games they were and excellent attendances. Re Celyn, if you put WWFA into Google it will show that the game this year between Llanelli and Neath was classed as the Senior Cup. Because of the high standard of competition in the SWFA Senior cup it was regarded as a prestigious Trophy to win. The Gwent Senior Cup seems to be well supported and eagerly awaited so I just wonder if you would miss it if Welsh League clubs were ommited as well as the County?
