Following the “Consultation” meetings that took place with the FAW this week, some clubs are pushing for a Welsh League SGM to get answers to some questions a lot of clubs have.
Whilst there are some valid questions that need to be addressed, I do feel that people might be getting their hopes up a bit that this in not already a done deal. As we saw with the Div2/3 Promotion/Relegation issue, the FAW is going to push ahead with the restructure regardless of who gets upset.
There is a fear amongst some WL clubs that some will drop out of the new structure if too many clubs make the ground criteria, or if their club cannot. The FAW don’t appreciate that Tier 4 (WL D3) in South Wales is not the same as Tier 4 in Mid or North Wales. The FAW response was that these clubs will still be playing at Tier 4 so there’s no difference. They are ignoring that being a WL club has a certain status to those involved and to those players who aspire to play at that level. That will be lost to some clubs if they cannot get into the new structure (Tier 3).
The WL is not going to fight any of this, if I heard correctly at the meeting, Ken Tucker was on the restructure committee, he’s hardly going to argue against it is he ?
Questions around what happens if clubs don’t meet criteria etc. or how FAW funding (Ground Improvements) can be accessed are valiid and need to be answered/clarified, an SGM is the correct forum for doing that. I just hope that clubs are not getting their hopes up that the FAW will backtrack on these plans that have been on the works for 4/5 years.
All Club Secretaries have been emailed this week asking for backing for an SGM, personally I would urge all clubs to support this as 2/3 clubs need to agree to request an SGM (I think - I may be wrong). So please get your club Sec to respond to the person who sent it out.
The WL will be gone in 3 years, but football will continue on under another name. It is in the interests of clubs to get all their questions answered and give them the best chance of getting into the new structure.

Does anyone know what is likely to happen to Tier 4 and below across wales?
Also Tier 3 is going to be split into 4 divisions of 16 according to the FAW website. Be interesting to see how this works also, as 3 of the tier 3 leagues currently feed Huws Grey Alliance, is this going to be the same type of regional split with 3 leagues covering north and mid wales and one covering South/West Wales?

There will be 1 x Tier 2 division and 2 x Tier 3 divisions in South Wales, and exactly the same in North Wales. Tier 2 divisions will come under the direct control of the FAW. Tier 3 in South Wales will be managed by the current Welsh League committee. Tier 4 in South Wales (currently WL Div 3) will come under their local FA, so South Wales, Gwent or the equivalent in West and Mid Wales.

So will all this effect Gwent County Division 1? Will they promote a few teams with ground criteria out of the Gwent county?

If any Gwent clubs don’t make the new structure then yes it will affect the Gwent County. The trouble is, no-one knows what will happen if/when that happens. Nothing has yet been said about promoting other clubs or about running with fewer than 16 teams. I guess we will know more next season if any Div 1 clubs don’t make the ground criteria, which they have to do by 30 April. This is why a meeting is needed.

Nothing is ever clear with the welsh league. What I’m taking from it is that division two and three will become south east and south west all at tier 3, so basically tier 4 teams get a sort of promotion. The big changes seem to come in the north and mid leagues who all filter into the cymru alliance.

If there are Mid Wales clubs who meet the criteria they could be in the mix as well (depending on where the North/South split is). Also if clubs in current Div 1 don’t get the Tier 2 licence in April, they could be relegated this season meaning more teams at the bottom of Div 3 could be pushed out. I guess any Div 1 teams that get relegated due to not having a licence would be offset by not relegating the teams in the bottom 3 if they do get the licence. But to be honest we are assuming things because they have not been made clear by the WL or FAW.

Does anybody know who represented the Welsh League on this Decision Making Committee ? During the FAW presentation it was stated by the FAW guy presenting that Ken Tucker was on the committee. Unless I misheard.

Does that mean clubs will be told there’s a line in wales and if they fall below it they play in the south? If it’s by choice then the mid wales league feed the north as it stands and they probably would want to stay that way by choice?

Yes there will be a virtual border. For example, once all 32 clubs who will compete at Tier 2 are known, the FAW will split them North and South.
You could have a situation whereby 2 clubs are relegated from the Prem and are North based clubs, and 1 club from the North is promoted along with 1 from the South. This would leave 17 clubs in North and 15 in the South, so 1 club will have to change divisions.
The same will be true at Tier 3 but East/West this time.

That last paragraph may as well say that the FAW are happy for “Survival of the Fittest” to prevail.
