Hello everyone, I am currently attempting to ascertain some data from WPL spectators and their thoughts regarding the football-specific alcohol legislation. Whilst there is research out there, this is always from the perspective of teams in the EPL, despite the law also applying to the WPL. With this in mind, i wondered whether some of you would be kind enough to take part in my survey. No private data is collected and it should take no longer than 5 mins. The link is here: bristol.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1ZYofngBficZnLf and i thank you in advance for your consideration. Have a great Sunday all. Matt

Strange I can have a steaming hot coffee on the touchline but not a pint of lager.
Know which I would have thrown over me

It’s a bit of a joke really, I don’t drink so it doesn’t affect me, but you can have plenty of beer out of sight of the pitch then go and watch the game, so why can’t you have a drink in the stand ? What’s the difference ? The only reason I can think of is showing people drinking on TV. But that hasn’t stopped them showing rugby games where plenty of supporters have pints in hand. Oh I don’t know.

You are allowed to drink at non league games. Merthyr have this facility as do the team I go to watch FC United of Manchester. If Merthyr are allowed drink why aren't the rest of non league teams in Wales

Oh I don’t know. Agreed. Although in Scotland, they cannot even drink in the stadium out of 'direct view,' a complete blanket ban. The justification there for not possessing alcohol in 'direct view' was because they were worried about the containers being used as missiles which happened during the 1980 Celtic v Rangers Scottish Cup Final. This led to their creation of football-alcohol laws in 1980, with England and Wales following suit in 1985. It was one of the things that stood out to me when watching the WC actually, when the cameras often panned to fans with pints. Didn't see much disorder there either did we.

If Merthyr are allowed drink why aren't the rest of non league teams in Wales The WPL is 'designated' for the purposes of the legislation. Personally, i think it is disproportionate that the WPL is included, but i am also aware that not everyone feels this way. Some fans, for a variety of reasons, don't want to be around it. Which is what i am trying to gather from the survey

The WPL is a proscribed league under the alcohol at football ground regulations along with the Premier League and EFL in England due to European competitions. The FAW prevented drinking alcohol at all grounds during matches, in my opinion quite wrongly, it could not be enforced at clubs like Merthyr playing in English competitions. Due to a rule change made at the last FAW AGM drinking at clubs with a licenced premises is now allowed in designated areas but not at pitchside.

Good thread. How are rugby fans allowed to drink themselves into a pack of frenzied madmen after an international?? Its just called "hi spirits" by the authorites and sent home... with a football fan, it is an arrest, court monday morning, banning order and a 4 figure fine. Sins of the fathers syndrome..

Is there anything in the public domain regarding the FAW AGM decision? I am also assuming the designated areas are not in 'direct view' of the playing area during the game, or that would be against the law?
