I wouldn't allow my dog to play at that ground but I can see why the football purists take a shine to the place. It is what it is but a little bit of a clean and a lick of paint now and then would have at least helped. The place was rancid on every visit

I love the place, the pitch is small and not great, but it feels alive with the crowd. A real ground with atmosphere. It's a shame like many grounds in the Welsh League they were the pride and joy of the village in days gone past. Plus the twice I have managed there we have picked up 6 points. Good luck with finding a new ground lots of good people at the club.

I'm a huge fan of the Treharris ground, makes a change from the 3g cages that will inevitably start appearing in the next few years.

As a player in Welsh league for a few years I have visited this ground on 3 occasions. Every time I have enjoyed playing here, there is always a hostile crowd that can't wait to get on your back. The small pitch and even down to the plastic garden chairs and cold showers. Enjoyed every bit of that on each separate visit. Gives a buzz of a typical old fashioned Welsh league ground and i for 1will be sad to see it go and sad to not play there again. Always a warm welcome in the club house after the game I hope it doesn't affect the existence of the club.

So much contradiction on these forums - people want the game to progress in Wales, talk about improving the quality of the football, bemoan the FAW for not taking action, then we have a nostalgic resurgence for grounds like this. Save our past mantra.
Absolutely nothing against Treharris Athletic FC - it's one of the few grounds I have scored at! But grounds like this are what limits (not necessarily holds back) the development of football in this country. It's too small, the drainage in recent years has not been good enough, and the changing rooms are undesirable especially in the winter. I repeat, this isn't in any form slating the club itself, it's just football has moved beyond this.
You could argue grounds like this help players develop by giving them variety on surfaces and tactics; but honestly, they don't.

Well said fpd, I feel sorry for Treharris, however this ground has been on borrowed time for many years. Just unfortunate this has come a little early for them. I believe the proposed new facility on the old Trelewis ground is not yet ready. There must be other pitches in the Merthyr area suitable for WL football they can share, maybe even Penydarren Park itself. Looking at the fixture list, I don't think they have a first team home game until the end of November, so plenty of time to organise.

I'm a huge fan of the Treharris ground, makes a change from the 3g cages that will inevitably start appearing in the next few years. What's a 3G cage? Jenner Park is 3G (but I guess/presume not a 'cage'?) and the photos on social media showing 2, 4 or 6 games per weekend regardless of weather suggest that 3G might be a good thing. I might have missed a point, but I'm not seeing the downside of 3G yet, when compared with months of cancelled football due to unforeseen rain, in Wales, in the winter.

Unfortunately, some local authorities have seen fit to construct 3g pitches at leisure centres etc, Abertillery, Liswerry are examples, great for training, but not football stadia per say. Grounds such as Penydarren Park, Cwmbran Stadium, Jenner Park, Park Avenue, Latham Park are real football stadiums and have benefitted greatly by having artificial grass surfaces, is it the way forward for all clubs? I'm yet to be convinced. Iceland has been quoted by some as a good example, well I've been there and you would be hard pressed to get a good grass pitch to grow there.

I realise my contradiction but as I have not played at any of the grounds and have only watched games I can't comment on the facilities from a players standpoint.
For 3G cage see STM Sports ground at The University Playing Fields in Llanrumney.
I would prefer to see the original grounds remain and the pitches upgraded to 3G. Merthyr have done this very well in my opinion, retaining the character of the ground while upgrading the pitch to 3G and also improving the bar areas and facilities.
I take your points on board Ffanpeldroed but surely there would be a way of upgrading the pitches without having to demolish years of history and character many of the old grounds provide.

Sadly then Treharris going the same way as another famous old Welsh League ground.....Blandy, the home of once-mighty Garw. I'm told Garw will never get back in the Welsh Lge playing out of Blandy. So for Blandy now read Treharris. Mixed thoughts though because as someone else mentioned on this thread they were inconic kind of links with the Welsh Lge in another era. Flipside of course is that both grounds are reduced to the glorious past and we have to move on to more modern stadiums. RIP Blandy + Treharris.
